Tips to Learn English Vocabulary
How big is your list of words that you need to study regularly? Does it have 500, 1000 or even 3000 words? It is easy to create the vocabulary list very quickly, but it is impossible to continue studying all the words while you are an advanced English student. In this article, you can find ways to learn vocabulary most effectively and without wasting time.
Use Context to Learn Quick Words
When you see a word, it's much easier to grasp its meaning or hear it used in real life in context. You can understand what the word means by starting from the situation in which it is used. For this reason, you should always review interesting videos, articles, books or audio tracks so that you can link the new word to the situation you first saw. If possible, use the original phrase where you see the word used as a sample phrase with the new word. This helps you link an "unknown" word to an idea where you remember where the word was used.
Faster Word Recall
According to our experience, it is easier to remember when we examine new words for the first time in 1 day. When we examine new words 2 or 3 times in 1 week, we will learn them successfully. You need to work 15 minutes a week to remember words that will stay in your mind in the long term. The key is to see or hear words 3 or 4 times during the first week in question.
The best way to review new words and build your vocabulary successfully is to watch videos or re-read the article you see new words first. You get a review of the context and you also see the words. This is an important opportunity.
Learning "Old" Word Lists
If a word is used frequently, you will see it shortly after learning. Therefore, if you forget a new word, it is probably not used very often. Why try to remember a word you would never use? The idea of creating a vocabulary is to find words that will be used frequently.
Also, after learning new words (after studying them for about a week), if you hear them out loud or see them in writing for several weeks, you will probably recognize it. Keep learning and exposing yourself to have the chance to hear, read or experience as much language and vocabulary as possible.
Sometimes you find words that are difficult to remember because you haven't learned other words like this. As your English vocabulary grows, it will be easier to remember more advanced vocabulary and strange words, because you will be able to connect them to other words that are similar to English.
If you can't remember a word, don't worry any more. Stop working. You are not ready to learn the new word or phrase yet. If it is an important phrase or word, you will see it being used frequently and will become more familiar each time.
