Lesson 61: Using Adverb Clauses to Show Time Relationship

Structure:

  • Subordinator (Time Conjunction) + Subject + Verb, Main Clause
  • Adverb clauses of time usually begin with subordinating conjunctions such as:
    • When
    • While
    • Before
    • After
    • As soon as
    • Until
    • Since

Examples:

  • When: "She was reading a book when the phone rang." (The phone ringing happened while she was reading.)
  • While: "While he was studying, it started raining." (The rain started during his study.)
  • Before: "I finished my homework before I went out." (I completed my homework first, then I went out.)
  • After: "After they left, we cleaned the house." (We waited until they left, then we cleaned.)
  • As soon as: "As soon as the bell rang, students left the classroom." (Students immediately left when the bell rang.)
  • Until: "We waited until she arrived." (We waited and stopped waiting when she arrived.)
  • Since: "I haven’t seen her since she moved to another city." (I last saw her before she moved.)
