Lesson 45: The Passive Form of Modals and Phrasal Modals

Present Simple Passive with Modals

  • Structure: modal + be + past participle
  • Examples:
    • Can: "The report can be finished by tomorrow." 
    • Must: "The documents must be signed." 

Past Simple Passive with Modals

  • Structure: modal + have been + past participle
  • Examples:
    • Could: "The project could have been completed earlier." 
    • Might: "The message might have been sent by mistake." 

Future Simple Passive with Modals

  • Structure: modal + be + past participle
  • Examples:
    • Will: "The announcement will be made next week." 
    • Should: "The issues should be addressed soon." 

Phrasal Modals

Phrasal modals are phrases made up of a modal verb and a preposition or adverb. They can also be used in passive constructions.

Examples

  • Have to: "The report has to be submitted by Friday." 
  • Need to: "The work needs to be completed on time." 
  • Be able to: "The solution will be able to be implemented next month."
