Lesson 33: Polite Requests
Can
- Usage: "Can" is used for informal and friendly requests.
- Form: [Subject] + can + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- "Can you help me with this?"
- "Can I borrow your pen?"
Could
- Usage: "Could" is used for more polite and formal requests. It can also be used to express past ability.
- Form: [Subject] + could + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- "Could you please open the window?"
- "Could I ask you a question?"
Will
- Usage: "Will" is often used for friendly requests and is slightly more formal than "can."
- Form: [Subject] + will + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- "Will you pass the salt, please?"
- "Will you help me with my homework?"
Would
- Usage: "Would" is the most polite and formal way to make a request.
- Form: [Subject] + would + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- "Would you mind closing the door?"
- "Would you like to join us for dinner?"
Making Requests More Polite

Please: Adding "please" to your request makes it more polite. You can place "please" at the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence.
- "Could you please help me?"
- "Please, could you pass the sugar?"

Excuse me: Starting your request with "excuse me" shows politeness and gets the listener's attention respectfully.
- "Excuse me, could you tell me the time?"

Would you mind: This phrase is used for very polite requests. It is followed by the gerund form of the verb (-ing).
- "Would you mind helping me with this?"
- "Would you mind waiting a moment?"
