Lesson 32: Using May, Might, Maybe, Can, Could
May
- Usage: Used to express possibility or permission.
- Form: [Subject] + may + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- Possibility: "It may rain later."
- Permission: "You may leave now."
Might
- Usage: Used to express a smaller possibility than "may."
- Form: [Subject] + might + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- Possibility: "It might rain later."
- Suggestion (polite): "You might want to check your email."
Maybe
- Usage: An adverb used to express possibility.
- Form: Usually placed at the beginning or end of a sentence.
- Examples:
- "Maybe it will rain later."
- "It will rain later, maybe."
Can
- Usage: Used to express ability, permission, or possibility.
- Form: [Subject] + can + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- Ability: "She can swim."
- Permission: "You can go now."
- Possibility (informal): "It can be very hot in July."
- Usage: Used to express past ability, polite requests, or possibility.
- Form: [Subject] + could + [base form of the verb]
- Examples:
- Past ability: "He could run very fast when he was young."
- Polite request: "Could you pass the salt, please?"
- Possibility: "It could rain later."
