Lesson 28: Basic Article Usage
1. Definite Article (The)
The definite article "the" is used to refer to specific nouns that are known to both the speaker and the listener.
- Use "the":
- When talking about something specific that both the speaker and listener know.
- Example: The cat on the roof is mine. (Refers to a specific cat that is known to both.)
- When referring to something that has already been mentioned.
- Example: I saw a movie. The movie was exciting. (Refers to the movie already mentioned.)
- When talking about something specific that both the speaker and listener know.
2. Indefinite Articles (A/An)
Indefinite articles "a" and "an" are used to refer to non-specific nouns. They are used when the exact identity of the noun is not important or not known.
- Use "a":
- Before words that start with a consonant sound.
- Example: a book (a consonant sound starts the word "book")
- Before words that start with a consonant sound.
- Use "an":
- Before words that start with a vowel sound.
- Example: an apple (a vowel sound starts the word "apple")
- Before words that start with a vowel sound.
