Lesson 20: Personal Pronouns

Types of Personal Pronouns

  1. Subject Pronouns
    These pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence. They perform the action of the verb.

    • I – used for the speaker
      • I am going to the store.
    • You – used for the person being spoken to
      • You are very helpful.
    • He – used for a male person or animal
      • He is reading a book.
    • She – used for a female person or animal
      • She is cooking dinner.
    • It – used for objects, animals whose gender is unknown, or situations
      • It is raining outside.
    • We – used for the speaker and others
      • We are planning a trip.
    • They – used for multiple people or things
      • They are watching a movie.
  2. Object Pronouns
    These pronouns are used as the object of a verb or a preposition. They receive the action.

    • Me – used for the speaker
      • She called me.
    • You – used for the person being spoken to
      • I saw you at the mall.
    • Him – used for a male person or animal
      • We met him at the party.
    • Her – used for a female person or animal
      • I gave her the book.
    • It – used for objects or animals whose gender is unknown
      • I found it on the table.
    • Us – used for the speaker and others
      • They invited us to their house.
    • Them – used for multiple people or things
      • I will help them with their project.
  3. Possessive Pronouns
    These pronouns show ownership or possession.

    • My – belonging to the speaker
      • This is my pen.
    • Your – belonging to the person being spoken to
      • Is this your book?
    • His – belonging to a male person or animal
      • That is his car.
    • Her – belonging to a female person or animal
      • Her phone is on the table.
    • Its – belonging to an object or animal whose gender is unknown
      • The cat lost its collar.
    • Our – belonging to the speaker and others
      • Our house is big.
    • Their – belonging to multiple people or things
      • Their kids are playing outside.
  4. Possessive Adjectives
    These are used before nouns to show ownership.

    • MyMy car is red.
    • YourYour dog is friendly.
    • HisHis book is interesting.
    • HerHer dress is beautiful.
    • ItsIts color is bright.
    • OurOur office is closed.
    • TheirTheir house is old.
