The “past perfect tense” is used in English to indicate that one event in the past happened before another. In this tense, we indicate a sequence between events. It is often used to emphasize another event that happened before the time when one event happened. We form this structure with “had + verb3”.

For example:

I had already eaten breakfast when she arrived.
They had finished their homework before they went to bed.
To form the “past perfect tense”, the auxiliary verb “had” is used, followed by the third form of the verb.
