Conditional sentences are English grammatical structures used to express events that will happen under certain conditions. There are two or more types of conditional sentences, each expressing a different situation or possibility.
1. Zero Conditional:
- This structure is used to express general truths and facts.
- Formula: If + present simple, present simple
- Example: If you heat ice, it melts.
2. First Conditional:
- This structure is used to express possible future events and their results.
- Formula: If + present simple, will + verb
- Example: If it rains tomorrow, we will stay indoors.
3. Second Conditional:
- This structure is used to express unreal or improbable events and their results.
- Formula: If + past simple, would + verb
- Example: If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.
4. Third Conditional:
- This structure is used to express unreal past events and their hypothetical results.
- Formula: If + past perfect, would have + past participle
- Example: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
