Structure:

  • Subordinator (Condition Conjunction) + Subject + Verb, Main Clause
  • Common subordinators for expressing conditions include:
    • If (if)
    • Unless (except if)
    • Provided (that) (only if)
    • As long as (provided that)
    • In case (in the event that)

Examples:

  • If: "If it rains, we will stay home." 
  • Unless: "You won’t pass the exam unless you study hard." 
  • Provided (that): "We can go on a trip provided (that) you finish your work." 
  • As long as: "You can borrow my car as long as you drive carefully." 
  • In case: "Take an umbrella in case it rains."
