Structure:

  • Subordinator (Contrast Conjunction) + Subject + Verb, Main Clause
  • Common subordinators for expressing contrast include:
    • Although (despite the fact that)
    • Even though (stronger than "although")
    • Though (similar to "although")
    • Whereas (in contrast)
    • While (in contrast)

Examples:

  • Although: "Although it was raining, they went for a walk." 
  • Even though: "Even though she was tired, she finished the project." 
  • Though: "He enjoyed the trip, though it was exhausting." 
  • Whereas: "She likes coffee, whereas he prefers tea." 
  • While: "While I prefer reading, my sister enjoys watching TV."
