Comparatives

  • Usage: To compare two things or people.

  • Structure:

    • For one-syllable adjectives: Add -er to the adjective.
      • Example: "tall" → "taller" (John is taller than Mike.)
    • For two-syllable adjectives ending in -y: Change -y to -ier.
      • Example: "happy" → "happier" (She is happier now than before.)
    • For adjectives with more than two syllables: Use more before the adjective.
      • Example: "interesting" → "more interesting" (This book is more interesting than that one.)
  • Structure with Adverbs:

    • For one-syllable adverbs: Add -er.
      • Example: "fast" → "faster" (He runs faster than his brother.)
    • For adverbs with more than one syllable: Use more.
      • Example: "carefully" → "more carefully" (She writes more carefully than he does.)

Superlatives

  • Usage: To express the highest degree of a quality among three or more things or people.

  • Structure:

    • For one-syllable adjectives: Add -est to the adjective.
      • Example: "tall" → "tallest" (John is the tallest in his class.)
    • For two-syllable adjectives ending in -y: Change -y to -iest.
      • Example: "happy" → "happiest" (She is the happiest person I know.)
    • For adjectives with more than two syllables: Use most before the adjective.
      • Example: "interesting" → "most interesting" (This is the most interesting book I’ve read.)
  • Structure with Adverbs:

    • For one-syllable adverbs: Add -est.
      • Example: "fast" → "fastest" (He is the fastest runner in the team.)
    • For adverbs with more than one syllable: Use most.
      • Example: "carefully" → "most carefully" (She writes the most carefully of anyone.)
