Defining Relative Clauses:

  • Function: Identify or define the noun. They are essential to the meaning of the sentence.

  • Punctuation: No commas are used.

  • Usage: They specify exactly which person or thing we are talking about.

    Examples:

    • "The student who sits next to me is absent."
    • "The book that she recommended was excellent."

Non-Defining Relative Clauses:

  • Function: Add extra information about the noun, which is not essential to the meaning of the sentence.

  • Punctuation: Commas are used to separate the clause from the rest of the sentence.

  • Usage: They provide additional details but do not change the basic meaning of the sentence.

    Examples:

    • "My brother, who lives in New York, is visiting us next week."
    • "The car, which I bought last year, is already broken."
